Porter Regional Hospital presents Hearing Aides Not Enough? Cochlear Implants May Help

VALPARAISO, IN (April 7, 2016) -Porter Health Care System will present “Hearing Aides Not Enough? Cochlear Implants May Help” at 6 p.m. Monday, April 18 in the Community Room at Porter Regional Hospital, 85 East US Highway 6 in Valparaiso.
If hearing aids aren’t sufficiently helping, cochlear implants may be an option for both adults and children with severe to profound hearing loss, explains ENT Specialist Dr. Matthew Provenzano, who will discuss cochlear implants along with other options for those with hearing loss during this free program.
Unlike a hearing aid that amplifies sound, a cochlear implant is an implantable hearing solution that delivers sound straight to your auditory nerve.
“Hearing loss can have significant implications to a person’s emotional and physical health,” says Dr. Provenzano. “The social isolation that results from not being able to hear can be devastating. I encourage people to seek treatment early, when there is a lot we can do.”
As part of a multi-disciplinary team at Porter Physician Group’s Ear, Nose, Throat & Sinus Center, Dr. Provenzano sees cochlear implant candidates who range in age from children born deaf to adults who develop hearing loss later in life. He is one of only a few fellowship-trained pediatric otolaryngologists in Indiana.
“One of the things we pride ourselves on is how we’ve developed a team approach with our audiologists to help our patients step-by-step in the process,” he says. “For our cochlear implant patients, our goal is to ultimately help them find a place in the hearing world and be able to do the simple things in life that many take for granted, like talking on the phone or going to the movies.”
