Northwest Health Launches the First Family Medicine Residency Program in Northwest Indiana

Northwest Health has earned accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) for its new family medicine residency program which will help attract, train and retain physicians to the region.

ACGME is an independent organization that sets and monitors the professional educational standards for preparing physicians to deliver safe, high-quality medical care to all Americans. The Northwest Health family residency program is the first and only family medicine program in Northwest Indiana. Northwest Health is set to welcome residents in July of 2023.

With ACGME accreditation, Northwest Health's family medicine residency program can participate in the National Resident Matching Program, a mechanism for matching the preferences of applicants for residency programs with the preferences of residency program directors.

Residency programs are a clinical training program for doctors who have graduated from medical school and are ready to receive training in their area of specialization. Family medicine residents spend three years in a residency program. The Northwest Health residents will work with many physicians across Northwest Medical Group, Healthlinc and its hospitals to gain experience overseeing the full continuum of care.
