Eat a Healthy Heart Diet with Help from Porter Regional Hospital

VALPARAISO, IN (May 26, 2016) – Having a better understanding of what’s in our food is a key component to making better choices.
“People have to read the labels,” shares Vanessa Provins, a clinical dietitian at Porter Health Care System. “We’re creatures of habit, but it gets easier over time.”
Provins breaks down the steps to a “Healthy Heart Diet” in a free monthly class offered at Porter. The next sessions are 1 to 2:30 p.m., Tuesdays, June 7 and 21 in the Cardiac Rehabilitation Room on the second floor of the hospital, 85 East US Highway 6 in Valparaiso.
Participants gain a better understanding of how to read labels, choose heart-healthy foods, improve their cholesterol levels and learn basic food preparation tips.
“People are always surprised to find out how much sodium is in their food,” Provins shares. “When you use herbs and spices it takes away the need for salt. Nothing has to taste flat if it’s properly seasoned.”
Pre-registration is required for Porter’s Healthy Heart Diet classes. To register, call 219-983-8874.
